Pennyrile Group of the Cumberland Chapter
Working Locally, in Western Kentucky!
About Sierra Club
A national environmental organization
Today, with more than 700,000 members, the national Sierra Club is America's oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization.
Sierra Club is organized into regions across the country called CHAPTERS - which usually encompass a state. Chapters focus on chapter/state-wide issues, and are further organized into local GROUPS, which focus on local issues within their immediate Group region.
As stewards of the earth, its resources and the life it supports, members work to preserve and restore wildlands, protect endangered species, and fight for clean air and water. The Sierra Club mission is to explore, enjoy, and protect the planet.
The Cumberland Chapter and its Groups
The Cumberland CHAPTER
The Cumberland CHAPTER (a.k.a. the Kentucky Chapter), of the Sierra Club was founded in 1968, encompasses the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky, comprises 6 active Groups (and 3 regions designated for future Groups) and, since its founding, has grown to an estimated 5,000 members.
The Pennyrile GROUP of the Cumberland Chapter
Our Pennyrile GROUP includes all Cumberland Chapter members who have zip codes that begin with the following 3 digits: 423 or 424. These postal zip codes include the following counties:
Davies, Hancock, Henderson, Hopkins, McLean, Muhlenberg, Ohio, Union, and Webster.
Some of the environmental issues impacting our Group region include sprawl, and air and water quality problems exacerbated by Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, and coal-fired power plants. These problems impact the health and well-being of our families and communities as well as the ecosystems of the Ohio and Green Rivers, wildlife management areas, lakes, and parks - like Lake Malone State Park.
In our mission to explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the earth we not only get involved in issues, but have a fun and active outings program. To view our upcoming outings, check out the Cumberland chapter's outings calendar. Please join us!
