| The Cumberland (Kentucky) CHAPTER, founded in 1968, encompasses the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky, comprises 6 active Groups and, since its founding, has grown to an estimated 5,000 members. The Sierra Club mission is to explore, enjoy, and protect the planet. The Cumberland Chapter works through lobbying, political elections, public education, and activism to protect Kentucky's water and air quality, support local farmers and healthy, sustainable food production practices, encourage the development of a safe, clean and sustainable energy economy in Kentucky, and provide outdoor activities and adventure opportunities for Kentuckians. Our Bluegrass GROUP includes all Cumberland Chapter members who have zip codes that begin with the following 3 digits: 403, 404, 405, and 406. These postal zip codes include the following counties: Anderson, Bath, Bourbon, Boyle, Clark, Estill, Fayette, Franklin, Garrard, Jackson, Jessamine, Lincoln, Madison, Menifee, Mercer, Montgomery, Nicholas, Owen, Powell, Rockcastle, Scott, Woodford. Some of the environmental issues impacting our Group region include sprawl, and air and water quality problems exacerbated by Mountaintop Removal, Surface Mining and coal-fired power plants. These problems impact the health and well-being of our families and communities as well as the ecosystems of the Kentucky and other rivers, wildlife management areas, our state parks and national forest - like Natural Bridge State Park and the Daniel Boone National Forest. In our mission to explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the earth we not only get involved in issues, but have a fun and active outings program.
