Great Rivers Group News |
May 2009 Great Rivers Sierra Club has a busy spring lineup. We have had a series of well-attended meetings with interesting speakers:
As far as outings have gone, Hap Chambers led a group of interested members on a bird-banding demonstration at Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge. Hap is a volunteer birder and Friend of the Refuge. Jim McCoy, an LBL Wildlife Biologist, led our last outing to discuss controlled burning as part of a forest management program at the US Forestry Service managed Land Between the Lakes. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, June 3 at 7 PM in Murray in the biological science building (the usual spot) and our next outing will be in June to Brad Lowe's farm (date and time to be announced). We welcome Monica Elliott as an ad hoc member of our ExCom. Various members are in the process of supplying area libraries, farmer's co-ops and chambers of commerce with copies of our Local Foods List. We have compiled a multipage booklet with names and contact information for anyone who raises their own fruit, vegetables, meats, honey, eggs and such and wishes to have an outlet to the public. It is a win-win situation with the farmer receiving buyers and the buyers receiving fresh products! Anyone with information on others not in the booklet, let us know! All copies and distribution have been volunteered by our members. Much thanks!
