About Us

Today, with more than 700,000 members, the national Sierra Club is America's oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization. As stewards of the earth, its resources and the life it supports, members work to preserve and restore wildlands, protect endangered species, and fight for clean air and water.

The Cumberland (Kentucky) Chapter, founded in 1968, encompasses the Commonwealth of Kentucky and, since its founding, has grown to an estimated 5,000 members. we've been involved in many conservation issues including protection of our waterways from the impacts of coal mining and factory farming; protection of our wild areas by introducing legislation to establish Kentucky's wild river system and lobbying for federal wilderness designation for the Beaver Creek and Clifty areas; and protection of our urban areas from sprawl and the negative health effects of poor air quality.

Our Mammoth Cave Group includes all Cumberland Chapter members whose postal zip codes begin with 421, 422, 426 and 427. These postal zip codes include the following counties:

Adair, Allen, Barren, Butler, Christian, Cumberland, Edmonson, Green, Hart, Logan, Metcalfe, Monroe, Simpson, Taylor, Todd, and Warren.

Some of the environmental issues impacting the Mammoth Cave Group area include sprawl, and air and water quality problems exacerbated by Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations and coal-fired power plants. These problems impact the health and well-being of our families and communities as well as the delicate ecosystem at Mammoth Cave National Park - the longest cave system in the world!

Several species of flora and fawna are endangered at Mammoth Cave. Some of the endangered flora include the Prairie Gentian, Small Sundrops, Eggert's Sunflower, and Buffalo Clover. Among the endangered fawna are several species of mussels, the Mammoth Cave Shrimp, the Slender Madtom fish, Bald Eagle, and several species of bats. Many reptiles and other plants and animals are listed as threatened or of special concern.

In our mission to "explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the earth" we not only get involved in issues, but have a fun and active outings program. To view our upcoming outings, check out the Cumberland chapter's outings calendar. Please join us!
