Service Trip: Trail Blazing & Maintenance |
John F. Robbins: 859-363-0376 Assistant Leader: |
Big Bone Lick State Park Boone County, KY |
Easy to Moderate |
| Since 2002 the NKY Group has blazed and maintained this park’s 2 newest wooded trails, Cedar Run and Bison Spur, adding about 1.5 miles to its prior 3.5 miles of trails.
Service outings in 2007 expect to accomplish routine trail repairs and maintenance, installation of a sitting bench overlooking a stream near the wooden footbridge on Cedar Run, painting new blazes on old Coralberry Trail, plus doing some honeysuckle removal. Outings usually start early to avoid daytime heat, ending by noon or 1 pm. Dress appropriately for work in a woods during sometimes hot, humid and/or damp conditions. It is preferable to have your own work gloves, but the NKY Group does have a few lightweight gloves for those in need. The leader will inform volunteers about scheduled tasks, including any needed extra tools. Sometimes work is done in groups, sometimes more individually. No restrooms are encountered on the trail, but restrooms are available in and near the parking area. Trail work often occurs a half hour or more from parking area, so expect to hike in while carrying tools. Bring adequate liquid and snacks or food for yourself. Rating: Easy to moderate. Beginners welcome. Minors must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian. Common tasks include trimming, weed-whipping, blaze-painting, rock and small stump removal, occasional digging and tree-cutting. The NKY Group will provide loppers and weed whips and the park officials will provide blazing paint and brushes. Trail workers provide their own hand-tools as desired, working at their own risk and pace. |
