Service Trip with Nature Conservancy | Joe Bina: 812-923-6974 Bonne Wolf, |
Harrison County Glades Southern Indiana |
Easy to Moderate |
| Join us as we work with the Indiana Chapter of the Nature Conservancy at one of the beautiful glades they steward in southern Indiana.
A glade is literally, “an opening surrounded by woods.” Years ago, natural fires kept the forest canopy cleared in some areas allowing prairie-like conditions to exist and sun-loving plants adapted to that environment to flourish. We will be clearing out “pioneer” cedars to let the sunlight back in and help restore the glade. No herbicides will be used but there may be cutting and certainly dragging of felled cedars to contend with. If you have a favorite saw, feel free to bring it and any appropriate safety gear. Otherwise, just bring water and a lunch and all tools will be provided. Rating: Easy to moderate, (work at your own pace/comfort level). |

Day Hike | Joe Bina: 812-923-6974 Charlie Mitch: |
Knobstone Trail – Leota Trailhead Scottsburg, IN |
Strenuous |
| This outing is co-sponsored by the Hoosier Chapter Winding Waters Group.
The 58 mile Knobstone Trail is considered some of the best hiking in Indiana. Its steep hills and knobs are used by some midwestern dwellers as a tuneup for hiking on the Appalachian Trail.
We will hike a 9 mile section starting at the Leota trailhead and ending at the New Chapel trailhead. From the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources description for this segment: “The trail crosses several steep ridges as it heads south from the Leota Trailhead through the Clark backcountry area. It then drops into the lush North Branch Valley, one of the most scenic areas along the trail (abundant ferns, wildflowers and very large trees), before winding its way up a very steep slope. The trail then traverses rolling to rugged terrain again, past a few wildlife ponds, to the New Chapel Trailhead.” Bring lunch and water. Hiking poles are recommended for the steep hills. For more information on the Knobstone trail see the Indiana DNR website at: www.in.gov/dnr Rating: Strenuous – 9 mile hike with steep hills. |

2nd Annual Chapter Wine Tasting | Mary Carol Cooper Contact: |
Rosemark Haven Bed & Breakfast Bardstown, KY |
Easy |
| Join us for an evening of elegance and fun while supporting our chapter’s annual fund. We’ll be holding our 2nd annual wine tasting event at Rosemark Haven, a beautiful Kentucky bed & breakfast in Bardstown. We all had so much fun at our premier wine tasting in 2006 that we have decided to make it an annual event!
Guests will be taken back in time as they enjoy the gourmet hors d’oeuvres and abundant selection of wines in the completely renovated, historic surroundings of the 1830s. Music, a raffle, and a lot of fun will again be in store. In 2006 we had more raffle items than guests – so get ready to win some prizes and maybe get an early start on holiday gifts! Although our wine tasting event will be held in the wine bar, guests can feel free to come early and enjoy a gourmet dinner in the main house - a fully restored 1830’s antebellum mansion. For those people who would like to spend the night or get away for a long weekend, rooms can be reserved from the bed & breakfast website: www.rosemarkhaven.com. Last year a large group of guests stayed overnight and then went hiking the next morning at Bernheim (and they had a ball!) Please join us! Watch for details in The Cumberland newsletter and on the chapter website: www.kentucky.sierraclub.org in July/August. Rating: Easy, suitable for beginners. |
