Civil War Batteries at Devou Park, Covington,

Ft Wright,KY

Easy
Civil War Batteries at Devou Park, Covington and Ft. Wright, KY with a side trip to James A. Ramage Civil War Museum, Ft. Wright, KY
In September of 1862 men, women, and children worked together to erect an eight-mile defensive line from Ludlow to Fort Thomas, Kentucky to defend against a possible Confederate invasion. Men dug rifle pits, erected earthenwork forts, and cut trees for a field of fire using the limbs as barriers against infantry. 8,000 Confederate soldiers marched to Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, observed for two days, and decided that the defenses, manned by 22,000 Union troops and 50,000 militia, were too strong. The Confederate invaders withdrew in the night.

Although there is little left of these earthenwork batteries, the remnants of one is still visible, located in an area of Covington’s Devou Park that is slowly being trashed by illegal four-wheelers and close-in development. We’ll take a short hike in this part of Devou Park to see the remnants of the earthenworks and view some of the trails cut by the four-wheelers.

We’ll then proceed to James A. Ramage Civil War Museum located at Battery Hooper in nearby Ft. Wright, Kentucky. There the city of Ft. Wright is working to restore a battery. We will educate ourselves at the museum and view Ft. Wright’s restoration efforts. You are then welcome to a burger (grass-fed or veggie) cookout in one of the outings leaders’ backyard.

Rating: Easy, suitable for beginners. We may cut off the numbers if the group gets too big, so contact the leaders early.
