Join Mia Schmitt several Sunday afternoons of each month, April through October, for a leisurely (10 mph), 22 mile total, road bike ride on the flat, paved, and scenic (!), rail-to-trail Little Miami Trail. We’ll meet in Loveland, Ohio (20 miles east of Cincinnati); follow the bike trail as it meanders beside the lovely Little Miami River, enjoying the wildflower display of each season; ride to Valley Vineyards for wine tasting; then back to Loveland. 11 miles each way; weather permitting. You can even rent a bike and helmet in Loveland, from Loveland Bike & Skate Rental, 513-683-0468. Call early. There is a 10 rider limit each ride.

The Bluegrass Group’s beginning backpacking class will take their “graduation trip” this weekend. Anyone interested in a beginner’s level backpack is welcome to join us, subject to available space in addition to students. (If you are interested in the class as well, please see listing under September 23). Our hike will be about 2 miles to a scenic area of the Daniel Boone Forest. This will leave plenty of time to set up camp and relax or do additional dayhiking.

Rating: Easy, suitable for beginners.

If you are a Sierra Club member and would like to lead outings, join us at Berheim Forest (just 20 minutes south of Louisville) for OLT 101. We will be conducting an interactive session to prepare you for leading day hikes and car camping trips. The training will include a short hike along one of Bernheim’s trails to practice your new skills. A $10 fee covers materials and snacks.

Drapers Bluff and Cedar Bluff, IL Moderate
Enjoy the vertical environment. Learn about climbing gear, how to use it, and climb on the some of the best rocks in the Midwest.

This program will be conducted at Drapers Bluff or Jackson Falls in Illinois. The trip leader is an American Mountain Guide Association Certified Top Rope Site Manager. This is a beginner-friendly environment with many beginner and intermediate routes.

All participants must have had at least one day of previous indoor or outdoor climbing experience and will be required to sign a standard Sierra Club waiver. Bring your own gear (subject to approval by the trip leader). Some harnesses, helmets, and shoes will be available but sizes will be limited. Primitive camping is available on site and developed camping is available at nearby Ferne Clyffe State Park. In case of bad weather an alternate date will be established prior to the trip. Pets are not allowed on climbing trips.

Prerequisites: All participants must be Sierra Club members and must have had some previous basic instruction or experience in rock climbing techniques. The required instruction can be provided by the trip leader prior to the trip. Contact the trip leader at least one week prior to the trip to obtain approval to participate. All participants must complete and submit a medical approval form at least two weeks prior to the trip. Contact the trip leader or the Chapter Outings Chair (Joey Shadowen, 859-252-3422) for the form.

Rating: Moderate;suitable for beginners with some experience of all ages (the leader is 58 and afraid of heights). Limit – 6 people. Minimum age – 12. (children ages 12-18 participating without a parent will need a signed parental consent form and medical release form) Maximum age – none.

Travel to Middlesboro, KY Friday evening and set up camp. Saturday and Sunday morning hike the Cumberland Gap Trail in Daniel Boone’s footsteps. We will visit the historic Hensley Settlement Pioneer Village and explore the visitor’s center. This outing is along the historic “Wilderness Road” overlooking KY, VA, and TN.

Rating: Moderate, suitable for beginners; limit 12 people

Portal 31 Coal Mine

We’ll tour Portal 31, a formerly-active coal mine which is scheduled to be opened this year, by rail car. We’ll then visit the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum, located in an old company store. We can stay the night at the Benham School House Inn. An admission fee is charged for these activities.

Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area

Paddle from Dover, TN to Elbow Bay, KY along the Lake Barkley shore of the Land Between the Lakes. Depending on water levels we will camp on an island or an isolated area of shoreline Saturday night. The fall colors should be great with mild days and chilly nights. Waterfowl are abundant in this area. A backcountry camping permit is required and can be obtained in person at any of the LBL visitor centers. Rates are $5 per adult for a three-day permit and $15 per adult for a year-long permit. The leader is looking for an assistant leader for this trip.

Rating: Moderate; limit 10 people; Saturday we will cover about 15 miles and Sunday about 10 miles. This trip is suitable for intermediate kayakers. Any touring kayak is suitable. The use of recreational kayaks is discouraged due to the possibility of waves up to two feet, winds, and cool temperatures. If in doubt, contact the trip leader concerning your kayak.

Lets explore the history of Highland Cemetery. We will take a fall hike in this park-like cemetery maintained for the living as well as the deceased. We’ll visit historical grave sites, including those of fallen Civil War soldiers. A local retired journalist will act as our guide.
