Dayhike | Jerry Redden Assistant Leader: |
Red Byrd Arch, Red River Gorge, Slade, KY |
Moderate |
Red Byrd Arch is seldom visited in that it isn’t on a beaten path and is moderately hard to find. After lunch at the arch (if the river is crossable), we will go back down the Douglas Trail. If not, we will find some other interesting way back. There will be at least one take-off-your-shoes type stream crossing and some off-trail hiking. Rating: Moderate to strenuous, 6 miles, suitable for beginners in good shape. |

Spring Wildflower Dayhike | Dave Cooper: 859-299-5669 |
Jessamine Creek Gorge Jessamine Co., KY |
Easy |
| Jessamine Creek Gorge, at the Kentucky River, is one of the prettiest places to see spring wildflowers that I have ever seen. We will do a slow-paced walk, stopping to locate and identify spring ephemeral wildflowers such as bloodroot, larkspur and Virginia bluebells. We will have lunch at a small scenic waterfall. This is a beautiful way to spend a spring Sunday.
Rating: Easy, suitable for beginners |
| April 11 (Saturday) |
Dayhike: Highland Cemetery Nature Preserve | Ron Colwell 859-261-5314 |
Dixie Highway, Ft. Mitchell, KY |
Easy |
| Join us for a great hike to see the wonders of the spring wildflowers. These beauties are a fleeting show, and we have to get out and see them while they are here. This is a fun hike with waterfalls, streams, and a bit of area history included. Stick with us afterwards and we’ll have lunch at a fun, local eatery. Our destination is easily accessed off Interstate 75 at the Ft. Mitchell exit.
Rating: Easy, suitable for beginners. There could be wet weather and it may be a little muddy this time of year, so rain gear, good hiking footwear, and walking sticks are recommended. |

Service Trip | John F. Robbins 859-363-0376 |
Big Bone Lick State Park Boone, Co., KY |
Easy |
NKY’s trail service at Big Bone Lick State Park covers about five miles of mostly wooded hilly trails, including two blazed by the NKY group. Service outings in 2009 will do routine trail repairs and upkeep especially weed-whipping and bush and branch trimming. Expect the work crew to leave the meet-up location 15-20 minutes after scheduled start, so don’t come late unless you know where we’ll be working. Wear weather-appropriate work clothing, shoes with good treads, and work gloves. Bring your own liquids and trail snacks as desired. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Provide email and phone # in RSVP by noon on the Thursday before the trip. Expect a call or email by mid-Friday about the next day’s tasks, tools and meet-up location. Rating: easy to moderate, suitable for beginners, sometimes including labor in cool, damp, hot or humid conditions |

Dayhike | Jerry Redden: Assistant Leader: |
Indian Staircase, Red River Gorge Slade, KY |
Moderate to Strenuous |
| The scramble up Indian Staircase is often a rewarding and long remembered experience. But, it is not for everyone! If you have a strong tendency to panic in high places, this outing may not be for you. On the other hand, if you consider yourself borderline afraid of heights, this would be a good hike to face your fears. This ancient path is thought to have been created by the Adena Indians over 1000 years ago.
Rating: Moderate to strenuous, 6 miles, suitable for beginners in good shape. |

Canoe Camping | Larry Ridenour: 859-299-9470 |
Upper Green River Greensburg, KY |
Easy-Moderate |
This popular section of the Green River is very pretty and beautiful in spots. There are lots of exposed rocks and the surrounding landscape is rugged and secluded. Riffles and small rapids enliven the padding, but do not exceed class 1+. A canoe rental and shuttle service is available at the American Legion park in Greensburg where we will camp on Friday night. Saturday night we will camp somewhere along the river at about the 15 mile marker. We will learn about the 103 known species of mussels and a dam re-operation project by the Corp of Engineers. Rating: Easy to Moderate. Class 1, moving water with a few ripples and small waves, few or no obstructions, suitable for beginners. |
