Big Bone Lick State Park
Boone County, KY
Moderate

NKY’s Early Winter Hike covers all the trails in Big Bone Lick, including two blazed by the NKY Group in the past few years. This hike is easy-to-moderate, depending on the ground wetness and hiker tolerance for repeatedly climbing and descending small hills.

Wear weather-tolerant clothing, especially shoes with good treads.  Bring your own liquids and trail snacks as desired.  A restroom is encountered midway on the hike if needed. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Provide e-mail and phone number in RSVP by noon on Thursday, December 3.

Rating: Easy to moderate, suitable for beginners

As we walk along sidewalks beside tall buildings, we will mentally recreate over 200 years of history from the beginning settlement in a rustic blockhouse through great cultural and economic growth.

As we walk along sidewalks beside tall buildings, we will mentally recreate over 200 years of history from the beginning settlement in a rustic blockhouse through great cultural and economic growth.

We will see the site of many things that “used to be”- the “most orderly of disorderly houses, “ the brewery, Town Branch, the first of six courthouses. Why are there bullet holes over the door of the courthouse? Is the ghost still living in the Hunt Morgan House? We will think about our “proud” heritage as we visit the site of the slave market, slave jail, and slave whipping post.

The hike ends at a good Italian restaurant.

Rating: Moderate, suitable for beginners, about 4 miles, 4 hours (all pavement)
