Douglas Trail
Red River Gorge
Slade, KY
Moderate

The Douglas Trail is the trail that Oscar Geralds took Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas on when the Red River Gorge was about to be dammed.  Justice Douglas was swayed by the natural beauty and I’m sure a few comments from Oscar.  The justice declared the gorge was too pretty to be dammed.  We will be crossing bigger streams and there will be a couple miles of fairly rough off-trail hiking.  We will experience a couple of very remote, beautiful waterfalls.

Rating: Moderate, 7 miles, suitable for beginners

Covington and Newport, KY Moderate

Join us for our popular urban historical hike! As we did last year, we’ll visit local landmarks such as Covington’s historic Main Strasse district with its newly-refurbished carillon and the Goose Girl fountain, walk through the Covington Arts District to the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Mother of God Church, and see the historic homes as we travel back toward the Licking River.    We’ll visit the Peace Bell, stop in Newport on the Levee’s Pendleton Art Gallery, eat lunch, and then walk back to Covington’s Riverside district to see the riverside murals and some beautiful historic homes.

We’re considering an annual theme: gardens, art, architecture, churches, famous families, etc.… we promise to do our “history homework”- and depending on the theme, you can expect more of… -well, join us and see!

Dress in comfortable shoes- lots of concrete. Bring lunch money— we’ll be stopping along the way!

Rating: Moderate, suitable for beginners. The trip is approximately 6 miles; it’s relatively easy, but it IS …6 miles!

Big Bone Lick State Park,
Boone County, KY
Easy to Moderate

NKY’s trail service at Big Bone Lick State Park covers about five miles of mostly wooded hilly trails, including two blazed by the NKY group.

Service outings in 2009 will do routine trail repairs and upkeep especially weed-whipping and bush and branch trimming. Expect the work crew to leave the meet-up location 15-20 minutes after scheduled start, so don’t come late unless you know where we’ll be working.

Wear weather-appropriate work clothing, shoes with good treads, and work gloves.  Bring your own liquids and trail snacks as desired.  Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Provide email and phone # in RSVP by noon on the Thursday before the trip.  Expect a call or email by mid-Friday about the next day’s tasks, tools and meet-up location.

Rating:  easy to moderate, suitable for beginners, sometimes including labor in cool, damp, hot or humid conditions
