This is a beginning backpack class taught by members of the Bluegrass Group. You will learn about the proper equipment, safety, orienteering, survival skills and “Leave No Trace” ethics. Classes run for two weeks on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 pm. and will conclude with an optional weekend trip on October 17-18 (see separate listing).

Fees: This class is a fundraiser for the Bluegrass Group. A fee of $25 will be charged for materials.

Rating: Easy, suitable for beginners.

Eastern KY Easy

Come out for an elk-viewing trip of a lifetime.  We will visit Eastern Kentucky with Jamie Cook Watchable Wildlife Coordinator for the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife.  He will present a Saturday evening program on elk in Kentucky. 

On Sunday we will head out for an early morning trip to view these magnificent animals and hear them bugle.  We will arrive on Saturday, set up camp at one of the state park campgrounds and get some hiking in before dark.

Rating: Easy, suitable for beginners.

Daniel Boone National Forest, KY Easy

The Bluegrass Group’s beginning backpacking class will take their “graduation trip” this weekend.

Anyone interested in a beginner’s level backpack is welcome to join us, subject to available space in addition to students. (If you are interested in the class as well, please see listing under October 6).

Our hike will be about 2 miles to a scenic area of the Daniel Boone Forest. This will leave plenty of time to set up camp and relax or do additional dayhiking.

Eat and walk at our monthly social gathering. Join us for a short walk after a meal at one of Louisville Originals (locally owned restaurants). Check the Greater Louisville Sierra Club website for details.

Travel to Middlesboro, KY Friday evening and set up camp.  Saturday and Sunday morning hike the Cumberland Gap Trail in Daniel Boone’s footsteps.  We will camp near the historic Hensley Settlement Pioneer Village and explore the visitor’s center.  This outing is along the historic “Wilderness Road” overlooking KY, VA, and TN.

Rating: Moderate, suitable for beginners; limit 12 people
