About Us |
| Today, with more than 700,000 members, the national Sierra Club is America's oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization. As stewards of the earth, its resources and the life it supports, members work to preserve and restore wildlands, protect endangered species, and fight for clean air and water.
The Cumberland (Kentucky) Chapter, founded in 1968, encompasses the Commonwealth of Kentucky and, since its founding, has grown to an estimated 4,600 members. we've been involved in many conservation issues including protection of our waterways from the impacts of coal mining and factory farming; protection of our wild areas by introducing legislation to establish Kentucky's wild river system and lobbying for federal wilderness designation for the Beaver Creek and Clifty areas; and protection of our urban areas from sprawl and the negative health effects of poor air quality. The Pennyrile Group includes all Cumberland Chapter members whose postal zip codes begin with 423 or 424. These postal zip codes include the following counties: Davies, Hancock, Henderson, Hopkins, McLean, Muhlenberg, Ohio, Union, and Webster. Some of the environmental issues impacting the Pennyrile Group area include sprawl, Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, and coal-fired power plants. |
